Team Betty Boobs has been walking the Susan G Komen, Breast Cancer Walk for over 11 years. This group of inspirational women are based out of the Bay Area, CA.
While every participant has their own story, it is clear this event has moved them. The walk is a highlight of the year for the team and the other participants that come together. Team Betty Boobs set a goal of walking in every city the event is held. Approximately 4 cities are left for them to reach this goal.
Way to go Team Betty Boobs!!
Every year they plan, train and raise funds for weeks prior to the walk. Last year I participated in a Zumba Fundraiser event to support the group. While I was familiar with the walk attending the fundraiser event gave me additional perspective into what it takes for Team Betty Boobs to participate in the event. Seeing a glimpse of the team's spirit and passion for this cause was electric!
The Susan G. Komen 3-Day® is a 60-mile walk for women and men who want to do something huge in the fight to end breast cancer. Participants raise a minimum of $2,300 and walk an average of 20 miles a day for three consecutive days. – Susan G. Komen Website
I am not a stranger to cancer and it's effect on individuals and families. In my family alone 2 members were diagnosed and treated with breast cancer. Many of us do our best to live healthy lifestyles. Still "in 2015 it is estimated that among U.S. women there will be 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer." "40,290 breast cancer deaths." – Breast Cancer Statistics
This is a sobering reminder of how devastating breast cancer can be. Although we cannot guarantee a life of being cancer free, some lifestyle changes can contribute to lowering our risk.
According to the Mayo Clinic we are encouraged to:
(1) limit alcohol
(2) quite smoking or not smoke at all
(3) make physical activity a priority
Visit the Susan G. Komen website for more statistics and details about the 3-Day walk.
What lifestyle changes have you made to lower your risk of breast cancer?
